Chainsaw Man Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Has Sony achieved another hit? Following the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100 million threshold internationally, hitting a global total of over $108 million during its debut. The film beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Impressive American and Worldwide Earnings

The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It grossed $18.2 million in the U.S. after a strong $5.2M Saturday and $4.5M Sunday take. Globally, the animated by MAPPA feature earned nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M under Sony (over $43 million international, $18.2 million stateside). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.

Parallels to Other Successful Anime Films

Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group noted in prior discussions, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and opened to a similar $18M domestically. Reze Arc’s debut weekend is in line with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total is now positioned just behind the earlier film's $166.6 million final run. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will earn the numbers of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a major victory for Sony.

Promotional Efforts Fuel Performance

The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to drive their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The movie's promotional efforts began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a notable appearance at the New York Comic Con featuring behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and content creators as well after the final day of the event.

Looking Ahead

2025 stands as a major time for Japanese animation, and for the company, which has an additional animated movie releasing in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
