Goalkeeper Mary Earps has openly declared that her newly released autobiography was not designed to “criticize individuals” and voiced unease that audience feedback has been “misrepresented.”

Debated Statements and Supporters’ Disapproval

The ex-Lionesses player, who had a vital part in the Euro 2022 victory, faced backlash from fans and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps reportedly claimed told Wiegman she was “rewarding bad behaviour” by recalling Hampton to the Lionesses lineup after omitting her for being “disruptive and unreliable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps shared in an interview.

Defending Her Intentions

Earps clearly stated that her memoir was not meant to damage anyone.

• “My memoir wasn’t created to damage reputations in any shape or form.”
• “That is not who I am as a person.”
• “This reflects reality. It has repercussions. It is not a show.”

She also commented on how female soccer has entered a space that has become “almost like performance,” where private matters are analyzed in detail for public amusement.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps discussed losing the starting position as the first-choice keeper before the European Championship and how that created tension with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a difference of perspectives—and she still respects the head coach.

“Certain events that occurred during that period that I wish had happened differently,” Earps stated.

Private Challenges

In her book, Earps shared details of the bullying she suffered at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” section to revisit because it reawakened previous trauma.

• “I frequently thought that people were against me for the majority of my years.”
• “I became accustomed to feel like nobody really cares.”

These emotions led to stress outbreaks, and Earps revealed she faced challenges with physical appearance and used alcohol during the Covid pandemic to handle anxiety and depression.

Personal Life and Future Plans

Earps openly discussed that she is in a relationship with a woman and stated she is proud about her connection with Kitty.

She also talked about her wish to have children and revealed she has frozen her eggs for potential family planning.

“I deeply desire to be a mother and have a family of my own,” Earps said. “I enjoy my football career, but I wish to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “overwhelming and personal” and called for more research tailored to sports professionals undergoing equivalent processes.

In her statements, Earps emphasized that she has no feelings of remorse about her sports path or personal choices, highlighting that she always acted with integrity.
