Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He battled justice and the law won.

A couple of months following getting a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who's been under house arrest in his estate while a number of judicial steps and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a notorious top-security prison.

Previous Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing ex- military man exhibited little sympathy for Brazil’s inmates.

“What’s the need to provide these dirtbags a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Debate

Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week toured the facility in an obvious effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he expected the elderly leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the result of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “That’s virtually one meter squared per inmate.

“We talked to the convicts and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.

Penning in a leading publication, another ally, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its past”.

“It is an injustice that gnaws the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” he stated.

Divided Popular Response

That may be true considering the significant backing Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of numerous others who think he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from becoming president – and also scheming to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent president's allied group, commented: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain dignified care – but proper care while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the harsh conditions of inmates, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has always argued that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a prison to learn what situations are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning handling”.

Possible Jail Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable location appears to be a close prison for officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the spectacular leader's home, around 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and additionally a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report indicated.

Ideological Responses

The lawmaker criticized the talked-about idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
