RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
