New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
