While Germans were known for an image as Europe's most enthusiastic advocates of public nudity, recent survey data indicates that Denmark's citizens are not only more open-minded concerning undressing in public, and also more likely to have practiced it.

Survey Methodology

The comprehensive survey covered 6 western European states – the UK, the Danish nation, France, the German state, Italy and Spain. Data demonstrated that Danish respondents stood out as the most likely to declare that public nudity was completely fine – and to have followed through.

General Attitudes Across Europe

Unsurprisingly, substantial percentages across all participating states concurred that nudity was acceptable in designated nudist areas. Ranging from 84-94% were comfortable with private nudist camps, whereas a large majority were fine with clothing-optional shorelines.

Cultural Differences

While most people throughout the participating nations disapproved to nudity in places such as community pools and parks, Danish attitudes were distinctive. Approximately thirty-five percent of Danes felt it appropriate to undress on a regular beach, and 87% thought stripping off in personal outdoor space was appropriate.

Rural Nudity Perspectives

Participants from Denmark also demonstrated greater openness toward public nakedness in the open countryside. Meanwhile, the majority in other countries – from as low as fifty-eight percent in the German population to seventy-eight percent in British respondents – viewed hiking nude as unacceptable.

Swimming Naked

Regarding swimming naked in the sea, lakes and rivers, Denmark's residents showed by far the highest tolerance. Approximately 64% considered the practice perfectly acceptable, in contrast to just twenty-five percent of people from Italy, thirty-one percent of French respondents, 32% of UK residents along with forty-nine percent of respondents from Germany.

Personal Experience Levels

Participants from Denmark not only voice accepting perspectives and also demonstrated high participation percentages. In response to queries about in what seven settings they had engaged in nudity as adults, the majority of Danish participants indicated multiple instance.

That contrasted with 45% of Germans and forty-four percent of respondents from Spain. A significant divide appeared among these states and remaining participants, with only 31% of participants from France, 25% of Britons and twenty-two percent of Italians admitting to stripping off entirely in public settings in adulthood.

Specific Location Breakdown

Germany's FKK Culture

Participants from Germany, however, exhibited their champion status when it involved being naked in locations specifically designed for nudist practices. This reflects Germany's longstanding "Freikörperkultur" – a practice tracing its roots to the nineteenth century.

Despite falling interest in the past few years, Germany continues to be one of most permissive countries internationally for public nudity in authorized locations. Areas of beaches, lakesides and campsites are officially set aside for clothing-optional recreation.

Designated Naturist Sites

Data showed that just twelve percent of participants from Denmark had been naked in designated clothing-optional areas including beaches or campsites. That was higher than UK engagement at six percent, matched French rates at fourteen percent along with Italy's at eleven percent, but remained lower than Spanish 22% plus Germany's 25%.

Future Willingness

Danes furthermore showed higher inclination to participate in stripping off in open spaces prospectively. Around half stated they would be willing to remove clothing in a open space, versus forty-two percent of German respondents, thirty-eight percent of Spaniards, thirty-four percent of French respondents along with 29% of both Britons and Italian participants.

Group-Specific Trends

Throughout the six countries, male participants demonstrated higher willingness than female respondents toward public nudity. Demographic differences furthermore emerged: Within Danish society, youth were more accepting to naturism, whereas in German society the contrasting situation was observed.

Specifically, 31% of 18- to 34-year-olds expressed willingness to strip off in open spaces, against nearly half of older adults.
