Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Team

England have opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Favor Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five previous Tests.

In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the probable decision.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.

But the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
