Taliban Employed Discarded British Gear to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Inquiry Hears

A whistleblower has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential technology enabling the militant group to identify Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were advised to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to come to Britain to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet including their personal data, including names, addresses and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official stationed at special operations center in February 2022.

The breach was discovered in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on social media.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can locate you down to within metres. This is exactly how the unit accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, the source stated: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the investigation suggested that at least 49 family members and associates of individuals impacted by the breach had been executed.

A legal restriction concerning the leak was put in force in last year and restricted any information regarding the matter from being made public until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“We advised that they relocate when possible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the primary information that, if authorities had access to this information, would result in them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that an official review performed by a former official had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained terrible treatment suffered by concerned people, including electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“We have had four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get relatives to say where someone is,” she testified.
