The Dominik Diamond Personal Game of the Year Awards for This Year
Well, what did you think of the past year in your home? Was it all as good as one might claim on Facebook? Overflowing with A-grades for your offspring and elaborate dress-up celebrations for the parents? Or perhaps it was a swamp of frustration with only occasional entertaining moments? Is any of this authentic, or have we all become digitally altered synthetic personas with celebrity smiles?
I have gathered the family together, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the most important thing in twelve months: which releases we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Title Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into theatre school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her big sister has in the real world.
Game the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Title I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the wee small hours after family time.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I could play constantly. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I recognized even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the reader who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that as written, because I respect the passion, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when most games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names bellowed from the doorstep at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or endless scrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
