The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
