The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
