Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a return to football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

Southgate indicated his aim to focus his energy toward working with the next generation and countering what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook now existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Away from Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Prior to the launch of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, the author shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for young people, applying lessons from his period as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

The leader maintains that his journey managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, the coach observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often emphasizes disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His forthcoming book, Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on guidance and public spirit inspired by his distinguished career.
