The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
