The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
