Citizens have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict administration of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist a participant stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the east side district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis reported another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff stated.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
