This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
