What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
