Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Faith' in Teenager Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
